in sight is the first program sequence of DISLOCATIONS. It examines how different spaces condition the (in)visibility of bodies—showing, controlling, and inscribing them into history. Queer, female*, and subcultural perspectives on archives disrupt imposed orders through moments of shift and distortion. The exhibition employs projections to highlight what often remains in the dark: videos by Philipp Gufler and Naomi Rincón Gallardo and a sculpture and video by Constantin Hartenstein appear in the dimly lit exhibition space, displayed alongside slides from galerie weisser elefant. These works contribute to a feminist reinterpretation of archival materials in a display designed by Martha Schwindling. The exhibition is in dialogue with a performance by Lola von der Gracht and Danila Lipatov’s research on queer subcultures in the late GDR.

The first archive centre for lesbian-queer, feminist and sexual history, research, education and culture is moving to Neukölln in Berlin. They need your financial support for this. Three of Berlin's oldest and most important memory centres are setting up a joint archive centre.

What for? Collecting and preserving lesbian, gay, queer and feminist history is becoming increasingly important in times of a renewed shift to the right! The struggles of the past are our mission today - to inform, strengthen and inspire the generations that come after us. The merger as an archive centre means long-term security for the three participating archives: contracts for 99 years with the guarantee of stable rents and more space for the growing collections.


In the t-shirt motive, Philipp Gufler updates a poster of the National Working Group Repression against Gays (NARGS). This group, working supra-regionally from 1977 until 1981, adopted the motif of the Pink Triangle, in memory of the homosexual victims of National Socialism. The Pink Triangle was used to identify prisoners outed as homosexual in the concentration camps. Since then, it has been used as a positive identification and a political symbol by various queer movements, such as ACT UP during the initial period of the AIDS crisis in the late 1980s.

Philipp Gufler links this historical sense with current debates on gender-sensitive language and trans-identities together with the threat to democracy through right-wing extremism and populism. Queer  against oppression and facism is an intervention in current cultural debates, focusing on solidary communities instead of identitarian differences.

Philipp Gufler’s video installation Projektion auf die Krise (Gauweilereien in München) takes a kaleidoscopic glance back to the early days of the AIDS crisis in Germany in the 1980s – a time when Munich’s repressive policy against homosexuals reached its peak. The work assembles archival documents such as newspaper articles, advertisements, photos and press reviews from this period. The historical material comes with commentary and analyses by other artists.

The film screening will be followed by a conversation between Philipp Gufler, Marc Siegel and Zippora Elders as well as music by Susanne Sachsse.

As a professor for experimental film, Marc Siegel will engage with these topics and reflect on the historical contexts in Germany and the USA.


The artist Philipp Gufler combines various media in his work, including screen prints on fabric and mirrors, artist books, performances and video works. For the video installation Projektion auf die Krise (Gauweilereien in München) (2014), he began his research in the self-organised Forum Queeres Archiv München, of which Gufler is an active member. Gufler was awarded with the Media Prize of the German AIDS Foundation in 2020.

Kelly Krugman (she/they), born in 1994, New Jersey, is a Mexican-American curator, editor and project coordinator at SAVVY Contemporary in Berlin, Germany. She co-founded SAVVYZAAR, the radio pillar of SAVVY Contemporary, which is dedicated to the sonic as a space of healing, catharsis and protest. They have been part of curatorial teams of projects spanning exhibitions, publications and public programmes in Berlin and abroad.

Susanne Sachsse was born and raised in the GDR. She is a Berlin-based artist and co-founder of the art collective CHEAP. Her most recent works include sound, video and object installations, which have been shown at Künstlerhaus Bethanien (2022) and the Kestner Gesellschaft (2023), among others. Her first solo exhibition opened in 2021 at PARTICIPANT INC in New York. 

Marc Siegel is Professor of Film Studies at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. His research focuses mainly on issues in Queer Studies and experimental film. He is a member of the Academy of the Arts of the World in Cologne and part of the advisory board of the Forum Expanded section of the Berlinale.

Das Ausstellungs- und Publikationsprojekt präsentiert marginalisierte Stimmen der Kunst aus den 80er Jahren der BRD und verbindet historische und aktuelle Formen von Subkultur, Queerness, performativen und kollaborativen Arbeitsweisen.

Tabea Blumenschein (1952−2020), Hilka Nordhausen (1949−1993) und Rabe perplexum (1956−1996) waren exzentrische Stimmen der 80er Jahre. Abweichend von Normen agierten die drei Künstler:innen in Berlin, Hamburg und München. Sie lebten sexuelle Orientierungen nonkonform und repräsentierten nicht-anerkannte Geschlechts- und Identitätsbilder. Ihre Kunst überschritt die Grenzen von Genres und äußerte sich in kollaborativen Arbeitsweisen und flüchtigen Formen. Tabea Blumenschein wirkte als Performerin, entwarf Kostüme für Film und Theater und schuf Zeichnungen und Gemälde. Die Malerin und Schriftstellerin Hilka Nordhausen gründete in Hamburg den legendären Off-Space Buch Handlung Welt, der Kunstraum, Buchladen und soziale Kontaktzone war. Rabe perplexum malte und zeichnete, realisierte kollaborative Aktionen und war eine:r der frühen Videokünstler:innen.

Erstmals werden ihre Werke gemeinsam in den Städten gezeigt, in denen sie lebten und arbeiteten. Die zeitgenössischen Künstler:innen Ergül Cengiz (3 Hamburger Frauen), Philipp Gufler und Angela Stiegler haben dafür gemeinsam mit den Kunsthistorikerinnen Burcu Dogramaci und Mareike Schwarz eine Szenografie aus Bildern, Videos, Dokumenten, Texten und eigenen aktuellen Arbeiten geschaffen. So entstand im Austausch mit Zeitgenoss:innen ein audiovisueller Resonanzraum, der vielstimmige Einblicke in die subkulturellen Szenen der achtziger Jahre bietet und sie für das Heute reflektiert.

Can the ethnographic gaze be “given back”, restituted? Within the context of ethnology and the aesthetic avant-garde of post-war West Germany, the exhibition examines Hubert Fichte’s writing and takes it as the starting point for new artistic works on questions of representation and restitution, dissolution of boundaries and canonization, and updating colonial power relations.

The German writer Hubert Fichte (1935-1986) was fascinated by arts and religions of the African diaspora. In the 1970s, he travelled cities like Salvador da Bahia and Rio de Janeiro, Santiago de Chile, Dakar, New York and Lisbon, developing his utopia of a radical sensitivity. This sensitivity would serve research alongside intense interviews, intimacy through (gay) sexuality, self-reflexivity, and a condensed poetry of objectivity. Fichte’s experiments with dialogical forms of writing were incorporated in his monumental, unfinished cycle of novels Die Geschichte der Empfindlichkeit (The History of Sensitivity).

The exhibition and research project in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut, Hubert Fichte: Love and Ethnology, opens these works for a critical contemporary discussion. Since 2017, selected novels have been translated into Portuguese, English, French, Spanish and Wolof. For the first time, this stimulated a reception of Fichte’s writings in the places of their creation. Exhibitions curated on-site showed new artistic works. The concluding Berlin exhibition Love and Ethnology – The Colonial Dialectic of Sensitivity (after Hubert Fichte) gathers these inverted gazes and presents them against the backdrop of ethnology and the aesthetic avant-garde of post-war West Germany.

Einige geschichtsbegeisterte Lesben und Schwule gründeten im April 1999 das selbstorganisierte Archiv forum homosexualität münchen e.V. Seitdem arbeiten sie daran, aktuelle kulturelle und wissenschaftliche Beiträge und Erkenntnisse zu Alltag, Kultur und Geschichte von Lesben, Schwulen, Transsexuellen und Bisexuellen zu fördern, zu sammeln und für weitere Forschungen und die breitere Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen.

Philipp Gufler ist seit 2013 Mitglied des Archivs und realisierte 2014 die Videoinstallation und das gleichnamige Künstlerbuch Projektion auf die Krise (Gauweilereien in München), in denen er sich mit den 1980er Jahren und dem AIDS-Maßnahmenkatalog der damaligen bayerischen Staatsregierung auseinandersetzt.

Das Künstlerbuch I Wanna Give You Devotion entstand parallel zur gleichnamigen Installation von Philipp Gufler in München 2017. Dafür hat Gufler 29 Künstler*innen und Kollektive eingeladen, die Postersammlung von forum homosexualität münchen e.V. zu befragen, zu erweitern und zu aktualisieren. Diese neuen Poster wurden gemeinsam mit historischen Postern der Sammlung präsentiert, wodurch ein dichtes Geflecht aus aktuellem und historischem Material entstanden ist.

Seither sind im Rahmen seiner Forschung im forum homosexualität münchen e.V. weitere Arbeiten entstanden wie die Siebdruck-Serie Quilt oder die temporäre Bar Bei Cosy 2017 in Zusammenarbeit mit Richard John Jones im Rongwrong in Amsterdam.

Philipp Gufler wird bei I Wanna Give You Devotion aus seinem Künstlerbuch Indirekte Berührung (2017) lesen; in einem Gespräch mit Léon Kruijswijk (Curatorial Fellow der KW) liefert er zudem einen vertiefenden Einblick in seine künstlerische Recherche.

Die Veranstaltung findet in Kooperation mit BQ, Berlin statt. Am 28. Februar um 20 Uhr wird der Film Projektion auf die Krise (Gauweilereien in München) von Philipp Gufler parallel zur bereits laufenden Einzelausstellung King Louis II im Projektraum von BQ (QBBQ’s) in der Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße 15 präsentiert. Die Ausstellung läuft bis zum 16. März 2019.

In April 1999, a collective of lesbians and gays with a passion for history founded the self-organized archive forum homosexualität münchen e.V. Ever since the members have been working to promote and collect current cultural and scientific contributions and findings on the everyday life, culture and history of lesbians, gays, transsexuals and bisexuals to make them accessible for further research, but also for a wider public.

Philipp Gufler has been a member of the archive since 2013. He created the video installation and artist book Projektionen auf die Krise (Gauweilereien in München) in 2014, in which he deals with the measures of the 1980s Bavarian state government regarding AIDS.

In 2017 in Munich Gufler created the installation and the eponymous book I Wanna Give You Devotion. He invited 29 artists and collectives to question, expand and update the poster collection of the forum homosexualität münchen e.V. These new posters were exhibited along with historical posters from the collection, creating a dense network of contemporary and historical material.

The artist continued to produce works evolving from his research in the forum homosexualität münchen e.V., such as the silkscreen series Quilt or the temporary bar Bei Cosy, created in collaboration with Richard John Jones at Rongwrong, in Amsterdam in 2017.

During I Wanna Give you Devotion, Gufler will read from his artist book Indirect Contact (2017, German title: Indirekte Berührung). Moreover, a conversation between him and Léon Kruijswijk (curatorial fellow, KW) will provide a deeper insight into Gufler´s artistic research.

The event is organized in collaboration with BQ, Berlin. On 28 February at 20h, Gufler’s work Projektion auf die Krise (Gauweilereien in München) will be screened in the framework of the solo exhibition King Louis II in BQ’s project space QBBQ’s in the Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse 15, which is on show until 16 March 2019.

Setting
A neighborhood bar, a quiet place you eventually forget the name of, as your first visit recedes in your memory, indistinguishable from the hundreds of times you've returned, drank, and drank to forget more than just the name of the bar. Lined with floor-to-ceiling mirrors in ornate gilt frames, the tight space doesn't let you stray far from your own image. As you walk behind the row of bar stools with their patrons, there you are in the glass, looking over your own shoulder. Sometimes there are film screenings in the basement, the only time that the familiar scene is interrupted, when the regulars are again reminded of the name of the place: "Is this Reflections?" the newcomers ask as they enter the doorway, their skeptical expressions doubled in the mirror. Before anyone answers (and no one ever does) you've already entered, as if you've always known that this was the place. There's no sign on the front, but you can always find Reflections if you really need to.

The stage is empty except for Ludwig the King. He lingers over a glass, perhaps designing another extravagant castle in his imagination, or working out the details of his still unfinished Herrenchiemsee Palace. After bankrupting the royal purse and the monarchy tout court, he was declared insane and deposed by his ministers. Now an emigré living in a little German enclave in Chicago, he goes by Louis, but most of the regulars at the bar call him Lou. No wonder he recognizes himself more in the face of the cat, with whom he shares the feeling of being somehow irreconcilably different from his fellow drinkers, than in the reflection in the mirror.

Across the surface of these mirrors gauzy images transpire. Something familiar is queerly figured, a spectral face blending with our own. A bit like magic, we see other lives which rendered ours visible, and through our life something of theirs appears. In this little bar we see a distant transfer of Louis XIV’s Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, or Ludwig II's copy of it at Herrenchiemsee. The light of the sun reflected off the moon shimmering at the bottom of a glass; a Louis, a Ludwig, a Lou. Don’t think of it as a decline, but a transference of desires no less urgent or refined. Perhaps this bar is just as much a fantasy as the castle of Linderhof. Reflections is a real place, but you've never been there; I used to go there, but now I can't remember.

"The whole novel touches its own page bottom and turns to the next page" Hubert Fichte on his literary project "Die Geschichte der Empfindlichkeit"  

The title of Philipp Gufler’s first show at BQ borrows a term from the German novelist and ethnographer Hubert Fichte (1935 – 1986). Fichte associated this literal translation from Greek with the concept of a circular novel, which in its course returns to the point of departure. In his show, Gufler adapts Fichte’s thought as the conceptual idea of an abstract, orbital movement to reflect on exemplary themes, methods and forms that feature in his body of work. The artist book Indirekte Berührung / Indirect Contact forms the central piece of the exhibition and relates its elements in the form of a logbook. The installation includes mirrors that have been transformed with transparent colour pigments as well as layered fabrics with varying prints. These quilts are hung in the space and also constitute a separate space within the gallery. The last element is an acrylic glass showcase onto which the documentation of a previous performance is projected.

Making use of screen-printing on blue and pink plastic film with spiral binding (a technique which features prominently in his works), Gufler’s prose also takes a shape in which enables its haptic qualities to be experienced. Within these pieces, the reader encounters different characters, some of whom have inspired and influenced Gufler’s artistic production for a long time. They all position themselves on a fictional time scale, stretching from 1597 – the year in which the early baroque painter Caravaggio supposedly started work on his Narcissus – up to 2075 – the future year in which the performance een gebeueren, enacted in 1975 by the Dutch artist Ben d’Armagnac (1940 – 1978), will see its 100th anniversary. Besides locating these two artistic positions that are of personal relevance for Gufler, the years also serve as markers for a wide spectrum of reference points in his works that are often based on artistic research. All major characters – researchers, writers and artists alike – share a fundamentally critical attitude towards the norms of their time, putting into question cultural, political and sexual identity.

Indirect Touch allows historic figures and contemporaries of Gufler to meet outside the boundaries of chronological order. Gufler gives them an indirect voice in the form of appropriated fragments (which cannot be identified as citations in all cases). However, he does not merely cite or reproduce these characters but rather condenses the attitudes associated with or expressed by them. In the process of indirect writing, Gufler repeatedly seems to merge with his characters. The persona that links all 21 chapters is Jäcki, based on the gay flaneur and writer-protagonist from Hubert Fichte’s novel Palette (1968). Like Fichte, Gufler makes use of the character Jäcki as screen as well as ambivalent Doppelgänger (who never fully becomes the alter ego). The character Jäcki becomes a medium for repeated autobiographical passages that may be subtly woven into the text but may also dominate whole chapters.

Gufler’s literary and artistic self-assessments are indirect yet at the same time true to the principle ‘Put your self in quotation marks – call yourself a novel ’. The Fichte quote from Versuch über die Pubertät (1974), parts of which Gufler previously used in an exhibition title, illustrates a decidedly self-critical distance towards an up-close autobiographical approach. That same principle also governs Gufler’s installations and performances. His approaches to a choice of characters from a long tradition of emancipatory history are marked by the artistic pursuit of deeper involvement in regards to emotions and content. Gufler temporarily merges with his subjects of study and, in doing so, self-referentially reveals a fundamental difference between those subjects and himself.

Am 28.01. eröffnen wir die Ausstellung Belong Anywhere an zwei Orten in Berlin. Der zentrale Ausstellungsort ist eine AirBnB Wohnung, im Anschluss an die Eröffnung gibt es im ACUD MACHT NEU den zweiten Teil der Ausstellung, Musik und Drinks.

Die Ausstellung geht von AirBnBs Tagline “Belong anywhere” aus, dem Versprechen, überall auf der Welt zu Hause sein zu können. Berlin, Beirut, Beijing: AirBnB-Kunden bereisen diese Städte nicht mehr als Touristen, sondern erwerben das Erlebnis des temporären Dazugehörens zu einem Ort. Dabei stellt sich das anywhere zunehmend als imaginärer, translokaler und global homogenisierter Raum dar.

Die Arbeiten der Ausstellung gehen der Frage nach dem Zusammenhang zwischen den ästhetischen Strategien des AirSpaces und den wohnungswirtschaftlichen Verdrängungseffekten der Sharing Economy nach. Aus unterschiedlichen künstlerischen Perspektiven sollen die Verflechtungen der Corporate Aesthetic der DIY Bourgeoisie mit der semantischen Sphäre des englischen Verbs to belong aufgezeigt werden, welche auch auf die Gewalt von Privateigentum und Klassifikation verweist: Dies gehört mir und nicht dir. Der gehört dorthin und nicht hierher. Die Ausstellung nähert sich den kodierten Attributen und den Funktionsweisen des sozialen, imaginären Raums an. Welcome Home.

Eröffnung am 28.01. in der AirBnB Wohnung 18–21 Uhr, im ACUD Studio ab 20H. Im Anschluss legen im ACUD Marlene Stark und Elliver auf.

On January 28th, we will open the exhibition Belong Anywhere at two locations in Berlin. Following up the opening in the central exhibition space – an AirBnB apartment – the second part of the show will take place at ACUD MACHT NEU along with some drinks and music.

There will be a transfer via Uber-cars from the apartment to ACUD MACHT NEU, that functions at the same time, as space of display for an exhibition piece that has been conceived for especially this setting. The Location of the apartment and the first part of the show, will be announced the day of the opening – for this purpose please RSVP to belonganywhereex@gmail.com

The exhibition uses AirBnB’s popular tagline “Belong anywhere” as a starting point, the promise of being at home anywhere in the world, Berlin, Beirut, Beijing: AirBnB users travel to those cities not as mere tourists, they purchase and enact the experience of temporary affiliation to that place. In this notion Anywhere appears as an imaginary space, translocal and globally homogenized.

The works in the exhibition evolve around the trajectories and correlations between the aesthetical strategies of the AirSpace and the effects of displacement triggered by housing policies. Different artistic positions investigate the entanglements of the DIY Bourgoisie with the semantic sphere of private property and classification: This belongs to me and not to you. This one belongs there and not here. The exhibition approaches the coded attributes and operating modes oft he social, imaginary space. Welcome Home.

Opening on January 28th at the AirBnB apartment 6-9pm, at ACUD Studio from 8pm on. Followed by DJ Sets by Marlene Stark and Elliver.
